NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 24 – Twenty five United Nations Agencies in Kenya have launched a joint framework under which they will coordinate their development programs in the country.

The United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) program will spearhead various projects to the tune of Sh225 billion between 2014 and 2018.

The programs aim is to deliver unique comparative advantages in advocacy, capacity development, policy advice and programming for the achievement of related national priorities.

Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system in Kenya, Nardos Bekele-Thomas, says UNDAF is a direct outcome of the UN reform process which is designed to support the attainment of Vision 2030.

“The delivery as one with all the UN agencies coming together and working under one program framework and also monetary devaluation framework there will be reduction in cost management.”

“We are going to use that money for development purposes and we hope also in the process to mobilise more resources for development programs,” she says.

Speaking at a Nairobi hotel Monday morning, Bekele-Thomas confirmed that both the Government and the UN agencies will be working together to encourage ownership and leadership on development assistance.

“We have this commitment from the highest authority and working with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Devolution we can clearly see that that the government is really in the driver’s seat and in leadership.”

“With the strong commitment leadership and ownership from the government, I think the United Nations support will be nothing but productive and impactful.”

She also added that the government, the UN system and donors will form partnerships as a contribution to the achievement of national development goals and as a concrete step toward the realisation of Kenya’s developmental commitments to its people and the international community.

“This is actually the fourth UNDAF organised under the UN, it is very important because the government has adapted the delivery as one to be the instrument for the implementation of this program.”

“The delivery of one would be helping the country to have a program that’s more productive.”

“Results from Tanzania, Rwanda and Mozambique show that this is a very effective way of delivering development assistance,” she explained.
