NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 10 – Two suspected Al Shabaab members have shot and wounded a police officer in Ukunda town in Kwale on Monday morning.

According to the police, two assailants riding on a motorbike shot the traffic officer in the neck and robbed him his AK-47 rifle.

Another female officer was slightly injured after she was wrestled by the gunmen who escaped after the incident along the Lunga Lunga highway.

Regional police coordinator Aggrey Adoli said police have launched investigation and manhunt to recover the loaded firearm.

“The officer is receiving treatment at private hospital in Diani and he is in a stable condition,” he stated.

Adoli said the gang only targeted to steal the gun from the officer.

Traffic police officers in coastal region are being armed over recent incidents of terror related incidents in the coastal region.
