Mututho yet to receive summons from Lenku

“I have not been summoned by anybody and I am doing my job as per the law. There is nothing like being summoned for saying that money has been consumed. I would say it and I will continue saying it that come one, two, three months, you will have alcohol of good quality, you will have only the licensed bars and all these are crazy ideas of having strippers in Eldoret will be something of the past,” Mututho revealed/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 3 – The National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) chairman John Mututho says he has not received any summons from Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku over allegations that he had overstepped his mandate.

Mututho pointed out that he will continue with his duties and nothing will hinder him since he was doing everything by the book.

Officials at the Interior Ministry had said that the Minister is “unhappy with Mututho because he wants to run NACADA like his house.”

“I have not been summoned by anybody and I am doing my job as per the law. There is nothing like being summoned for saying that money has been consumed. I would say it and I will continue saying it that come one, two, three months, you will have alcohol of good quality, you will have only the licensed bars and all these are crazy ideas of having strippers in Eldoret will be something of the past,” Mututho revealed.

Mututho further stressed that he will not give up the fight against graft or illicit and substandard brew but will soldier on bravely.
“By the time we look at the handling of methadone, by the time we are looking at the former chairman and the former CEO, it is getting too murky so it is important that if you feel that the battle is getting to be too tough, throw in the towel or continue fighting until the referee finds it honourable to blow the whistle,” he said.

“The entire board agrees that a lot of money has been embezzled but nobody knows how much and that is what we are struggling to do. We want to tell all the pub owners that if you are having a license issued by NACADA, please do a photocopy, keep a certified copy ready to send it to NACADA when called upon.”

Mututho has been calling for the sacking of NACADA Chief Executive Officer William Okedi for alleged misappropriation of Sh400 million.

Okedi however denied the allegation and while Mututho insist that he is responsible for the alleged misuse of funds, some of the board members do not support him and have publicly supported Okedi.

While others – including Mututho – insist Okedi should step aside to pave way for investigation, some say the probe can be carried out while he is in office.

Last week, the board members clashed publicly after a daylong meeting which had been called to seal Okedi’s fate.

In December, Lenku summoned the NACADA chairman after he threatened individual and corporate businesses dealing in alcoholic drinks, with his public statements – most of which were not supported by any law.
