NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 20 – Police are looking for a gang that shot and killed a Kenya Power Company engineer after luring him out of a drinking joint in Ngong on Wednesday night.
Witnesses told police that Hannington Nyongesa had just arrived at the bar to watch a football match when he received a telephone call and rushed out to answer it.
“We are told that is when patrons in the bar heard gunshots, and on checking they realised he had been shot by the gunmen who fled the scene immediately,” a senior police officer briefed on the matter told Capital FM News, adding: “some people said they witnessed a confrontation before the men opened fire.”
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Earlier as patrons in the bar tried to administer first aid on the man whose home is nearby, his wife was called from his phone by the attackers.
“I was confused… I didn’t know who was calling because, here was my husband who had been shot and at the same time someone was calling using his phone when we are at the scene,” Ngongesa’s widow, Beatrice, said.
During the phone conversation, she said, the caller told her “we will also come for you” before they hang up but called again.
“The second time they spoke to a relative but still insisted they want to speak to me. I could not talk to them but when we tried the number it was off,” she said.
This chilling message has left Beatrice, a mother of three convinced that her husband’s death must have been orchestrated by people who know the family well.
“I just don’t know why they had to kill my husband,” she said.
Police said they are following crucial leads to unravel the mystery behind the murder, while waiting for phone records to aid their investigations.
Nairobi police chief Benson Kibui has assured that they are determined to unearth the mystery behind the murder, and arrest the killers.
“The matter is under investigation, and I can assure you we will get them,” Kibui said, adding officers would also speak to the family to establish if there were any form of threats issued prior to the brutal killing.
CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro said they will not relent until they get the killers. “Everything is being done, we are on top of things,” Muhoro said, assuring the family that they will get justice.
Cases of people being shot dead or attacked in their homes in Ngong and the neighbouring areas are raising serious concerns of security in the region, even after police assurance that they are firmly in charge.
