Kidero said the law which was passed by the County Assembly will disburse Sh16.5 million for the development of infrastructure in each of Nairobi’s 85 Wards.
“Development funds have not always reached the people they are supposed to help and this new law has come in to ensure that such scenarios are a thing of the past.”
“The fund will now reach all the wards and they will be equal which means that all wards will have an equal chance to do something meaningful with the money,” he explained.
Kidero said the funds would be released at the beginning of the financial year to each of the wards and this will be done annually.
“The money will be distributed beginning in June and at the end of the financial year before more money is released the ward representatives will be required to give an account of how they used the money.”
“Education and Infrastructure, mainly the roads and transport, are the main areas that are featured in the fund; this is a start and in due course other areas will be covered,” he explained.
Nairobi Woman Representative Rachel Shebesh lauded the new legislation saying that it was the first of its kind in the 47 Counties.
She added that this will ensure that all Nairobi residents live in developed areas urging the county assembly members to monitor the implementation and use of the money.
“This law is similar to the Constituency Development Fund only difference is that it devolves the funds to the ward level. This is a show of the county’s commitment to devolution, money is not only handled at the county level but it is disbursed that way it reached everyone,” she explained.
She added that this is a start of development for the county saying that plans are underway to restart the slum upgrade project and establish markets for the hawkers who have encroached on the roads.
