NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 28 – Friday can be described as a defining moment for the Orange Democratic Movement as the party seeks to elect new members to fill various positions of leadership during its National Delegates Convention.

During the event, about 3,200 delegates will deliberate various matters of importance and thereafter take part in the most important exercise which is the election of new national office bearers.

The term of the current national officials came to an end in December last year.

The Young Turks, mostly comprising first-timer MPs, have called for an overhaul of the party leadership accusing the old guard of lacking fresh ideas to propel ODM into government.

The post of Secretary General is being contested by Nominated Senator Agnes Zani and Budalang’i MP Ababu Namwamba.

The leaders in Zani’s camp are Wycliffe Oparanya for the deputy leader’s post, Funyula MP Paul Otuoma who is going for the position of Chairman and Otieno Kajwang who will be seeking the position Vice Chairman

Those on Namwamba’s side include Hassan Joho who is going for Deputy Party leader position, Josephat Nanok who will be vying for the post of Chairman and Adan Keynan who will be seeking the post of Vice Chairman.

According to Namwamba, his team has a mix of experienced and youthful leaders ready to take over the party and guide it to victory in the 2017 General Election.

Nominated Senator Jane Ongera, a former ODM executive director has also thrown her weight behind the Namwamba group, saying it was best placed to steer the party to victory in 2017.

The ODM Governing Council had also announced plans to recommend amendments of its governing laws at the meeting in a bid to align itself with Kenya’s Constitution.

The party polls come even as a the High court declined to halt the elections after six Kasipul Kabondo delegates sought to halt the polls on grounds that their names had been omitted from the party list.

Under a certificate of urgency, the delegates urged the court to suspend the National Delegates Convention saying their democratic right to participate in electing new party national office bearers had been violated.

Justice David Majanja however dismissed their application saying they had not exhausted the party dispute resolution mechanism.
