NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 20 – The Committee on the Rapid Restoration of the Westgate Shopping Mall will commence public hearings on Monday.

The committee which was appointed following last September’s terrorist attack at the mall, will hold its sittings at Charter Hall.

Committee Vice Chairman Wahome Muchiri explained that the weeklong sittings will be held to receive formal submissions from stakeholders and the public touching on the rapid restoration of the mall.

“In view of our mandate, the committee hereby notifies the stakeholders and general public wishing to appear before it that the public hearings will be held from Monday 20 January to Friday 24 January, 2014 between 900hrs to 1700hrs each day. The sittings shall be held at Charter Hall, City County Government Headquarters, City Hall Way, Nairobi,” he said.

The committee which was appointed by Commerce and Tourism Secretary Phyllis Kandie is mandated to advise the government on the speedy recovery mechanisms for the Westgate Shopping Mall to avert unnecessary job and related economic losses.

The committee is also mandated to identify the affected stakeholders and their considered recovery needs and advise on suitable primary and secondary security and other interventions in order to restore the confidence of the public and consumers in continuing to patronize shopping malls and retail centres.

Muchiri assured Kenyans that the committee has been making wide and extensive consultations with various stakeholders as it gears up to make relevant recommendations.

He pointed out that the team’s recommendations will also address necessary measures for the quick restoration of business at the mall, restoration of shoppers’ confidence as well as stabilization of the local retail sector.

“As a committee, we are working hard to prepare a detailed advisory report; to facilitate an integrated recovery strategy for Westgate Shopping Mall while focusing on a national level economic resilience plan when faced by such tragic acts,” Muchiri explained.
