The University of Nairobi Academic Registrar says third year students in the college of humanities and social sciences who were expected to report on January 13, 2014 should now report on January 20, 2014.
NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 2 – The University of Nairobi has announced that all students who were sitting examinations at the time of closure following rampage over the Killing of a student by police on December 15 should report on Sunday January 5, 2014 for resumptions of their examinations.
The Registrar announced that all first year students who were expected to report on Monday January 6, 2014 will now report on January 13, 2014, apart from first year students in the School of Arts and Design and the School of Built Environment who will report on January 27, 2014.
Levels third, fourth and fifth in the college of health sciences are due to report on Monday January 13 as per the previous schedule.
The University of Nairobi was closed indefinitely on December 15, 2013 following violent riots which were sparked by the alleged killing of a student by police.
Students were ordered to leave the university immediately, following the closure announced by the Senate after a special meeting.
The Senate meeting was prompted by chaos witnessed at the campus for the better part of Sunday when the students first marched to Central Police Station, where they demanded to be addressed by the divisional commander.
They wanted to be told circumstances that led to the death of their colleague, before they took to the streets.
The group of students later engaged anti-riot police in running battles on University Way roundabout, where they hurled stones and other objects at motorists.
Chaos at the university started when the students took to the streets, to protest a suicide incident, involving a student who was being detained, at the Central Police Station cells.
The Engineering student who committed suicide, is reported to have been arrested after he allegedly tried to break into a room in the campus where evidence of his alleged cheating in an examination was kept.
It is during protests over the suicide incident, when another student was allegedly shot dead by police on State House road.
