NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 20 – Several people were injured after a minibus overturned on the Thika Superhighway on Monday morning.

The minibus was headed into the centre of Nairobi from Githurai when it lost control near Utalii Hotel at about 6.30am, causing a major traffic snarl-up.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident but police said “it was most likely speeding and overturned after the driver applied emergency brakes.”

Those injured were taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital and other nearby health facilities.

Police have intensified enforcement mechanisms since the beginning of the year, after more than 3,000 people were killed in road accidents across the country last year.

Last week, Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau announced that 141 people have been killed in road accidents since January 1, signifying a reduction from the same period last year when 203 people died.
