Rachael down but not out after brutal Westgate attack

She was rushed to hospital and later transferred to Mater Hospital where she was admitted for two months.

Rachael now continues with treatment to remove the remaining shrapnel stuck in the nerves of her left leg. She is also in the process of getting an artificial foot for her right leg.

The journey from Zimmerman to Parklands is tough since her much lighter brother Mwangi Muraya has to carry her on his back to take her down from her house on the second floor.

“She is big as you can see. I usually call my friends sometimes to help me carry her, other times I have to carry her on my back to take her to the car downstairs,” Mwangi asserts.

With harsh economic times and without a job to cater for her daily needs, Rachael relies on a friend who drops her to and from hospital when she has appointments.

Her greatest joy is that through the money donated by Kenyans. The Kenya Red Cross continues to pay her hospital bills.

Life of Hurdles

Rachael’s story does not end there. As she talks about her family especially her brother Mwangi who resigned from his job in Mombasa to come to Nairobi to take care for her, to date she is mourning her husband who died 14 days after their wedding in October 2012.

“I got married to my fiancée of three years on Mashujaa Day in October 2012. He died on November 9,” Rachael regrets.

Despite the hustles of life, Rachael wants to keep her star shining.

She says nothing is strong enough to kill the will of God and no matter the suffering, she believes God has a purpose for her.

She hopes she can get capital so that she can open a salon where she can do light roles to earn a living.

“It’s tough for me. I was used to walking, doing my work which involved a lot of standing because I am a beautician. I can’t manage to be where I was before, but I would like to do something to support myself. It is a bit crazy for me but I have grace I will walk again. I would like to open my own salon because I have an experience,” she hopes.

Rachael will appreciate any assistance accorded to her. Her number is 0723-505-321.
