NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 11 – Jubilee Members of Parliament are calling for an investigation into Bungoma Senator-elect Moses Wetangula’s allegations that there are plans to assassinate him.
Majority Leader Adan Duale on Saturday urged the Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo to further probe into the matter accusing Wetangula of sending false alarms.
“Many a time is when Kenyans driving on the roads they hit the road furniture but they do not go reporting that their lives are in danger (all sic).”
“As Jubilee members we demand that Kimaiyo should make a conclusive investigation into the matter and if it is found that there was no assassination attempt then he should be charged,” demanded Duale.
Duale added that the Senator should be charged with destruction of property on the road by the Nairobi City County government.
The majority leader asks the CORD coalition to stop brewing negative publicity in the country and instead work with the national government to resolve insecurity in the country.
“The owner of the banner should take legal action against Wetangula and his driver for the destruction of their property.”
“Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and his inspectorate should go to the site and also investigate because it is very shameful for a leader to pass such allegations. In the past we have had leaders shoot at their own car as a means of attracting attentions towards themselves,” said the majority leader.
However the Senator-elect has maintained that his car was shot at and did not hit a billboard as stated by the Inspector General.
He further denied accusations by the Jubilee team that he is crying wolf in an attempt to attract public sympathy.
He has gone on to challenge the Inspector General to provide proof of the billboard he has been accused of ramming into.
Kimaiyo on Friday announced that preliminary investigations show that Wetangula’s car was not shot at on Thursday night but hit a billboard.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga discounted speculation that the Senator was behind the alleged attack on his vehicle insisiting that it had been an assassination attempt.
“I am dismayed by the accusations that Wetangula is behind his own attacks yet no investigations have been done into the matter.”
” The senator is not capable of going to that length for any reason, instead of speculating wait for investigations to take place first,” said the former Prime minister.
The CORD coalition is however yet to give its take on the latest developments but the damage on Wetangula’s car and his account of events seem to corroborate the preliminary findings.
