NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 30 – Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has now withdrawn from vying for the Orange Democratic Movement’s Vice Chairmanship position in elections slated for next month.

Speaking to Capital FM News, the Governor said he withdrew to give others a chance to vie for the post and indicated that he would support whoever is elected.

He also asserted that he would remain loyal to the party and support all its endeavours.

“I have my reasons for withdrawing but the main one is that I want to give others a chance to vie for the post. You should not read a lot into it as I am still loyal to the party and will fully support it,” he said.

Kidero had earlier expressed interest in the Vice-Chairmanship, a position that has attracted the interest of Nominated Senator Janet Ong’era.

The office has three incumbents, former Changamwe MP Ramadhan Kajembe, former assistant minister Margaret Wanjiru and Nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro.

ODM will hold its National Delegates Convention on February 28 and March 1 where party members are expected to elect new party national office bearers. The event will be held at the Kasarani Sports Gymnasium where all the 26 positions from that of the Party Leader downwards will be contested.

During the two-day event, some 3,200 delegates are to deliberate on various matters of importance to the party and thereafter take part in the most important exercise which is the election of the national office bearers.

The term of the current national officials of ODM came to an end last month. First-time MPs, have called for an overhaul of the party leadership accusing the old guard of lacking fresh ideas to propel ODM to government.

With 91 MPs, 11 Senators and 16 Governors spread from different parts of the country, there are those who feel the national leadership of the party should be evenly distributed.
