Counties must aim for food sufficiency – Raila

He underscored the need for the country’s surveillance system to be strengthened to anticipate periods of disaster.

“There is need to strengthen existing national institutions that deal with monitoring natural disasters and changes in the environment. It has come as a bit of a surprise that we are back here again, especially in Turkana,” he said.

“The drought of 2009 was the first big test for the Grand Coalition Government. That drought made us form a Disaster and Drought Management Committee that coordinated advance positioning of food and water supplies in regions where they would be needed ahead of time.”
