NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 14 – Three people were injured on Tuesday after a building they were demolishing collapsed in downtown Nairobi.

Central Police Chief, Patrick Oduma said the three workers who were rescued under the debris were rushed to hospital, but responders were yet to establish if there are more trapped inside.

Addressing journalists, Oduma urged the public to avoid the area to allow for clearance of the debris of the collapsed building.

“At around 12pm, this building was being demolished for the purpose of building a new one but unfortunately those masons who were working on it fell down with the rubble,” he explained.

“They were slightly injured and were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital.”

Oduma said that the 12 masons were using manual tools to demolish the two-storey building.

“They were using manual tools with a view of creating way for the demolishing machine but before they could reach to the point they wanted, it collapsed,” he pointed out.

A witness, John Kamau, recounted the incident.

“We have rescued three people together with my colleagues. They have been rushed to the hospital by a well wisher,” he said.

Police officers were deployed in the area to control crowds.
