NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 30 – A police officer and an airline employee are among nine people arrested on Wednesday night with 29 fake passports and 39 visa seals, in a major travel racket unearthed after months of investigations by police.

The suspects who include Ethiopians, Somalis and Bangladeshi nationals were arrested during a sting operation, according to police who also detained the officer based at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

Some of them were picked up from the airport while others were arrested from their homes in various estates in the city.

“The suspects are expected to be charged in court,” Special Crimes Prevention Unit boss Noah Katumo said. “We are still looking for more suspects.”

The nine are accused of aiding foreigners to get the travel documents, amid reports they may have been working with immigration officials.

Police have been undertaking an investigation at the Immigration Department, targeting officials involved in the issuance of travel documents unprocedurally, risking the country’s security in the wake of terror threats in the country.
