In a press statement, TSC Chief Executive Officer Gabriel Lengoiboni indicated that the interviews are expected to be concluded in February.
He stated that the promotion of teachers who qualify under the common cadre establishment and Teacher Proficiency Course is also ongoing.
“KNUT had claimed that up to 53,000 qualified teachers had not been promoted while records held by the Teachers Service Commission indicated that only 6,675 teachers (or less) were eligible to be considered for promotion on attainment of higher qualifications,” he stated.
He explained that the joint committee appointed to verify teachers due for promotions is continuing with the exercise.
He has appealed to the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) to stop pre-empting the findings of the verification committee by releasing unconfirmed data containing names of teachers who are in the process of being promoted.
He pointed out that it is also likely that the data released by KNUT is outside the terms of reference for the verification committee.
“It is possible that some of the teachers who submitted their details to the union comprise secondary school principals who completed a Ministry of Education Kenya Education/ Management Institute (KEMI) course in school management last year,” he indicated in his statement.
“These teachers are not eligible for promotion because the course is intended to build their administrative and management capacity. In any case the MOE/KEMI Course is not an entry requirement for any grade within the schemes of service for teachers.”
He also called on the union to desist from pre-empting the findings of the verification committee by releasing unverified data which may contain names of teachers who are already in the process of being promoted.
“It is also likely that the data released by KNUT is outside the terms of reference for the verification committee. It should also be clear that even the 6,675 who have been captured by the TSC have not been fully verified to establish whether they actually meet the conditions set out in the schemes of service and policy framework that guides promotion of teachers,” he said.
The taskforce that was set up was to scrutinise the authenticity of the qualifications provided by the teachers and whether they deserve promotions or not.
