NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 20 – Former President Daniel Moi’s trusted ally and renowned Eldoret businessman Ezekiel Barng’etuny is dead.

Barng’etuny who had been ailing died on Friday morning aged 92, family sources said.

The former nominated Member of Parliament was seen as one of the closest allies of the former president during the Kanu days, and he is said to have been among close friends who frequently visited Moi at State House during his final days before he handed over power to Mwai Kibaki.

“He passed on this [Friday] morning. He has been unwell for some time,” a family source said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto sent condolence messages to Barng’etuny’s family, describing him as an influential politician.

In his condolence message, President Kenyatta said death had robbed the country of a leader and politician who influenced the politics of Nandi County and the country in general in a remarkable way.

“The late Barng’etuny was a man of insight and unique leadership qualities. His exemplary virtues of hard work and dedication to duty were an inspiration to many,” the President said.

President Kenyatta said the late Barng’etuny was well known for his business and farming acumen in Nandi County, describing him as a man of great humour and hard work.

“His death is not only a big loss to his family but the nation which he served with commitment and dedication,” he added.

Deputy President said Kenya has lost a visionary leader who will be remembered for shaping the country’s politics.
“He was a great mentor who inspired many young people especially those with political ambitions,” he said.

Ruto said Barng’etuny is credited with initiating several development projects within Nandi County and beyond.

“We will always celebrate his commitment to the promotion of education and entrepreneurship,” Ruto said of the businessman.
