Kevin Lameck, a former driver at the Venezuelan Embassy told the High court that Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed who is wanted for the murder of Olga Fonseca Jimerez, had claimed he was a relative of the former minister.
While testifying in a case in which former first secretary Dwight Saragay and four security guards have denied killing the deceased, Lameck said; “Mohammed told us that he is Haji’s nephew.”
Mohammed who is a prime suspect in July 26, 2012 murder is still at large.
On Monday, Lameck told trial judge Roselyn Korir that Mohammed was Saragay’s friend and the embassy staff were required to take instructions from him although he had no official role.
He told the court that Mohammed was opposed to Fonseca’s posting and had vowed to use his influence at the Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to make sure that she does not take up the position.
Fonseca arrived in the country on July 16, 2012 to replace Gerardo Carrillo who had been recalled following sexual harassment claims.
The court heard that on the night of the murder, Mohammed asked Lameck and another person to drive him to Maggie’s Coffee Shop in Gigiri at around 8.30pm to meet an official from the Foreign Affairs Ministry “who had the power to expel Fonseca since she had not been formally introduced as the ambassador.”
It is the prosecution’s case that Saragay made it possible for Mohammed to execute activities within the embassy by allowing him full access to the ambassador’s residence, offices, control of the finances, staff and general involvement in the embassy affairs yet he was not an employee of the embassy.
According to the prosecution, the motive of the killing was to resist the posting of Fonseca as the new envoy to take over from Saragay who at the time was in an acting capacity.
