NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 5 – Various parts of Kenya experienced an eight-hour power cut that ended mid Thursday morning, following a disconnection of supply from the Olkaria Geothermal power plant.

Some of the key areas affected included the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

In a statement, the Kenya Power said supply interruption occurred due to a fault on the transmission line between Olkaria sub-station and the Nairobi-North sub-station at about 1.15am on Thursday morning.

The company said power supply was restored by 9am.

“Due to the fault, power supplied from Olkaria Geothermal power stations was disconnected from the rest of the transmission and distribution system, causing an imbalance between demand and supply, and hence the outage,” the company explained.

In Western Kenya, the outage was occasioned by a disconnection from the rest of the national system, although some areas remained connected with power from Sondu, Sangoro and Turkwel power stations as well as supply from Uganda.

“Areas affected by a power supply interruption that occurred at about 1.15am today are now back on supply,” Kenya Power said.

The company did not disclose what caused the hitch at the transmission line but assured customers that the system engineers were still analyzing system logs to focus on the actual cause of the temporary fault.

“Kenya Power regrets the inconvenience caused to customers by the outage,” the national power supplier said.
