The bus was carrying Presbyterian Church youths who had been attending a conference in Mombasa back to Nairobi, when it collided head-on with the tanker at about 1 am.
Four of them died on the spot while six others succumbed to injuries in hospital where 30 others were still admitted.
Coast Traffic Police chief Martin Kariuki told journalists the bus was trying to overtake another vehicle when it collided with the tanker.
“The accident occurred late at night, killing four people on the spot, others have died in hospital,” he said.
Luckily, another police officer said, the fuel tanker that was carrying crude oil did not explode on impact.
Those injured were receiving treatment at various hospitals in Mombasa, mainly private hospitals due the health crisis which has crippled services at state-run hospitals, including the Coast General Hospital.
On Thursday night, ten people were killed when a truck rammed onto six vehicles in Isiolo, wounding seven other people.
According to police, the trailer lost control and hit the vehicles, including three taxis that were parked at Subuiga black spot on the Meru-Isiolo junction.
Traffic Commandant, Samuel Kimaru, has warned motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations to avoid unnecessary accidents, particularly during the festive season when most public roads are busy.
