NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 18 – It has now emerged that the White Widow, Samantha Lewthwaite, could be responsible for seven murders in Kenya.

The Daily Mail has reported that Muslim Clerics Aboud Rogo and Ibrahim Ismail are among the seven whose deaths Lewthwaite is suspected of orchestrating in what was a power struggle.

“Samantha Lewthwaite is fighting for greater control of Al Shabaab which is angering the organisation’s hierarchy. She has become paranoid and unreliable to the group after being on the run for so long. They believe her judgment is clouded and she could find herself out on her own very soon,” the publication quoted an intelligence source.

Lewthwaite has also been linked to the murders of East African Pentecostal Church pastor Ebrahim Kidata and Vikwatani Redeemed Gospel Church cleric Charles Matole last month.

Kidata’s body was found dumped in the bushes in Kilifi in what was a suspected strangulation while Matole died from a bullet to the head and was found on a chair in his church with a Bible on his lap.

At the time, the killings were thought to be unrelated but the Daily Mail report adds a new dimension to the story.

“We believe Samantha Lewthwaite is behind these killings as well as a gang of others,” the paper quotes Coast Police Chief Aggrey Adoli.

According to the Daily Mail, the police chief holds Lewthwaite responsible for the violence that followed both Rogo and Ismail’s shooting.

“She is wanted on charges of murder and inciting Muslim youths to violence.”

A section of the Muslim community however holds that the police are responsible for Rogo and Ismail’s killings.

Rogo had been on the terror watch list and was even arraigned in court on suspicion of involvement in the 2002 bombing of an Israeli-owned hotel and more recently the 2010 attempted suicide bombing of a Kampala stage coach.

International warrants of arrest have already been issued for Lewthwaite and her seven ‘disciples’ believed to be behind the recent spate of terror attacks in the region.

“She is without a doubt an incredible threat to national and international security. We are working round the clock to bring her in to stop her causing more carnage,” Adoli is quoted as saying.
