Tracing German history at Nuremberg

The Palace of Justice

Apart from history showcasing Hitler and his leadership style, Germans have also a rich history of how Nazi war criminals were punished. Top party officials and high ranking military officers, doctors and among others lawyers were charged with crimes against peace and crimes against humanity between 1945 and 1949 before the Nuremberg Trials at the Court 600 located in the Palace of Justice.

The International Military Tribunal (IMT) delivered its judgment against the Nazi leaders on September 30 and October 1, 1946. Whereas 12 of the accused were sentenced to death, three to life imprisonment, four were sent to serve jail terms of between 10 and 20 years. However, three others were acquitted during the ruling.

Hitler, his Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels and Reich Leader of the S.S and chief of the German Police Heinrich Himmler committed suicide even before they faced trial.

Apart from the courtroom, the palace has rich background of how the trials were carried out, sentences delivered including video clips of those sentenced to death being killed.

The Nuremberg trials formed a strong base for the establishment of the International Criminal Court which is a permanent court set to prosecute high ranking perpetrators charged with crimes against humanity.
