Tracing German history at Nuremberg

Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds

The remains of Hitler’s main operation centre still stand today. The U shaped unfinished building with brown bricks was designed and constructed to host 50,000 people attending Hitler’s rallies. By then it was referred to as the Congress Hall. The centre has rich photo exhibitions accompanied by original video recordings demonstrating Hitler’s regime of terror anchored on principles of racism, propaganda and hatred for Jews.

The videos have poignant pictures of Jews being massacred by the Germans. German soldiers under the command of Hitler shot dead thousands of them and buried them in mass graves. In one of the video recordings heart-rending images of thousands of bodies are paraded some in horrible and inedible shape.

One of the exhibitions has 60,000 cards with names of Jews murdered during Hitler’s 12-year regime. The cards also contain dates of birth and places of origin of the murdered persons. Each of the 60,000 cards represents 100 names of other Jews killed by the Germans to represent the total of six million Jews killed.

The Nazi Rally Ground was not completed but still stands as an historic site that was designed to have a sitting capacity of 405,000 people during Hitler’s regime. Hitler used the ground to address massive rallies as he planned to develop an Olympic-style stadium. Though the podium where the Nazi leader used to stand when addressing crowds is preserved and protected the ground below it is today used as a sports facility.
