NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 9 – Former radio presenter Joshua arap Sang has been reunited with his family and friends in Kenya after being away from home for almost two months owing to his International Criminal Court trial at The Hague.

The father of three left the Netherlands on Friday night and arrived in Nairobi on Saturday morning, after the Court took more than 10 days off before it resumes on November 21.

This is the first time Sang gets enough time off to be able to travel home since his trial and that of his co-accused Deputy President William Ruto started on September 10.

“He arrived at around 7am this morning,” said Sang’s lead counsel Katwa Kigen on Saturday.

Last Wednesday, Sang asked for excusal from being physically present at the court to be able to attend his six year old daughter’s graduation but his request was turned down.

The only judge who consented to the request was Trial Chamber V(a) Presiding Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji who felt the reasons given by Sang were compelling enough.

“In my own view, the request should be granted. Justice may be blind but it is blind for a purpose. At any rate it always had a heart that cared for the interests of small children. The request is to permit Mr Sang keep his promise to his six year old daughter,” argued judge the when the ruling was issued on October 31.

Sang’s and Ruto’s trial was meant to conclude on November 1 but was pushed to November 8 to allow the court make up for lost time.

A new schedule of their case was also created by the court after the trial against President Uhuru Kenyatta was postponed to February 5, 2014.

In coming up with the new schedule Judge Eboe-Osuji noted that it would help speed up the progress of the case against Ruto and Sang.

The court intends to resume on November 21 and conclude the accounts of two witnesses by Novembe29, when it will break for Christmas.

“We will resume again in hopes of completing the testimonies of the two witnesses by the 29th of November. The two witnesses would be any two of witnesses P0469, P0535 or the expert witness,” said Judge Eboe-Osuji on November 8.
