NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 4 – Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called for the total withdrawal of the draconian Kenya Information and Communication Bill which is meant to gag media freedom.
Musyoka said the media plays a pivotal role of highlighting grievances affecting the public and groups in the society, thus its freedom must be guaranteed.
The former VP was speaking when he addressed over 2,000 striking students of Cooperative University College who were holding a peaceful demonstration on Langata South Road demanding better facilities in the university.
Among the grievances the students laid out to the CORD deputy leader were increase of accommodation fees up to Sh12,000, no access to computer services in the university, small library, the only TV room also doubles as a classroom and an outdated university bus which serves all the branches of the University including Karen in Nairobi, Meru and Mombasa.
“It is important to safe guard press freedom so that grievances like the ones you have presented to me today and which have forced you to have peaceful demonstration can be highlighted and address by the relevant stakeholders,” Musyoka said
He promised to take up the matter to with the CORD secretariat for action which includes a stakeholders’ meeting to look in the issues.
