NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 9 – Ten suspects have been arrested over the attack in which the parents of Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor were killed in the wee hours of Friday.

Sources within the government said on Saturday that the 10 were apprehended by police officers as investigations into the gruesome killings continue.

The MP’s parents were attacked in their home and bludgeoned with blunt objects before the house was set on fire, burning them.

Owuor had on Friday told a crowd that had gathered outside his parent’s home that the house was set ablaze by cattle rustlers owing to the stand he has taken against the practice.

During a meeting with locals over cattle rustling on Saturday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku said arrests had been made and that the government would get to the bottom of the matter.

“The issue of Owuor’s parents came up during the public rally between Kisumu and Nandi boundaries over cattle rustling and the Cabinet Secretary revealed that some arrests had been made,” said Interior Ministry Communications Director Mwenda Njoka.

All Administration officers in the counties as well as some Governors, Senators and National Assembly Members were present during the security meeting held at the Chemelil Sugar factory.

Njoka added that locals want the law amended to make sure that suspects and other hardcore criminal do not easily get away with their offences because they can get bail.

They expressed fears over offenders being released on bail, only for them to continue with their criminal activities.

“There is no offence that is not bailable at the moment and locals see the need to change these laws so that you can’t get bail in some instances. And then there is also the fear that witnesses have after a suspect is released on bail,” explained Njoka.

The Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo was present during the security tour which started on Friday and he warned inefficient police officers in the area saying they would lose their jobs if found to be sleeping on their jobs.

According to Njoka, Kimaiyo said that such police officers would no longer be transferred to hardship areas but would be sacked.

“Kimaiyo said that he intends to overhaul police officers in the areas and as a punishment, rogue police officers will be fired not transferred to places like north eastern,” said Njoka.

The tour started in Kapsabet and Nandi Hills with locals there expressing fear over the increase in armed robberies. Lenku also met residents of Muhoroni over their insecurity concerns.

And he once again urged locals to support the ‘Nyumba Kumi’ initiative saying it would be used to safeguard the security of all Kenyans.
