NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 1 – British terror suspect and alleged mastermind of the Westgate shopping mall attack Samantha Lewthwaite spent £1,200 (Sh166,844) for three fake South African passports for herself and her two children around 2011.

A report in the UK’s Daily Mail claims that the 29-year-old ‘White Widow’ paid Ehmed Chisty for the documents before pitching camp with her family in Johannesburg under the pseudo name Natalie Faye Webb.

Chisty, who is currently serving a 37-year jail sentence for arranging thousands of fake documents, is quoted by the Daily Mail as having said that Lewthwaite went to him for a forged passport.

“I think if I hadn’t helped her, none of these people would have been killed,” he was quoted as saying.

She is the world’s most wanted woman after Interpol issued a worldwide arrest warrant last week and is also the widow of London’s 7/7 suicide bomber Jermaine Lindsay.

She has been on the run in East Africa after fleeing her Aylesbury home.

It was only 2012, when Samantha escaped a police net in Mombasa and also assisted another terror suspect to get away.

Reports also indicate that Lewthwaite is currently married to a former Kenya navy officer Abdi Wahid, and that she made 42 calls from Kenya to a mysterious ‘aunt’ in England.

According to the Daily Mail, the last four calls were made between November 2011 and January 2012.

Wahid is reportedly currently staying in Europe.

“The police document suggests that Lewthwaite may have called the ‘aunt’ from Kenya as many as 42 times – the last four in November 2011 and January 2012, shortly before she went on the run. All the calls went to voicemail,” read the Daily Mail.

At least 67 people lost their lives following the September 21 Nairobi attack, when suspected Al Shabaab combatants indiscriminately opened fire at people at Westgate, among them children.

Kenya’s security chiefs maintain that all the terrorists, among them women, were killed and that none of them escaped.

However, there are still concerns that some of them might have escaped.
