Ruto calmed ODM, PNU rivals – ICC witness

“There were some areas we could go and we could be told this is not our territory and so we are not supposed to campaign here, so we have to leave. And sometimes, we would be stoned and sometimes they would block the road so that we could not pass,” P0189 asserted.

She recalled that after the announcement of presidential results, Kalenjin youths came in lorries from the direction of the Marura area along the Iten Highway and started attacking Kikuyu youths.

“We heard some shouting by Kikuyus. They were shouting ‘they are coming, the Kalenjins are coming’. It was the Kikuyu who were running away from the Kalenjins. They were coming from the direction of Munyaka, they were around 50 to 100 youths,” she recounted.

The witness who said she observed the nasty happenings between Kikuyu and Kalenjin youth from the compound of ‘No. 6’ told the court both groups were armed.

“A Kalenjin person is black, tall and slim but when in the battlefield they were all in chalk head and face. The Kalenjin youth were the ones with white faces and white heads but the Kikuyus were the ones with rungus and pangas and the Kalenjin youth were armed with bows and arrows.

After the Kalenjins drove away the Kikuyus back to their neighbourhood in Munyaka area in Eldoret, they went back and were banging the gate of compound ‘No. 6’ where the witness was holed up.

“The Kalenjin youth came back and stopped at House No 6. They attacked House no 6. It was the place they attacked first. I was in the compound, at first they could not get through there was a gate,” she explained before the session moved to another private session.

The witness who appeared under similar protection measures as the previous two witnesses also had his voice and image distorted with frequent private sessions.

The prosecution informed the court that Witness P0189 is likely to take one and a half days to give her evidence after which the defence will cross-examine her.
