KTN chief, reporters summoned over Westgate expose

The CCTV footage aired shows soldiers entering the Nakumatt store armed to the teeth.

A while later, the soldiers casually walk out of the supermarket with plastic shopping bags in one hand and rifles in the other. It remains a mystery what they were each carrying.

The footage also shows empty beer bottles after the siege laid on the tables of one of the restaurants inside the mall. Cash registers are also seen opened, and bullets were fired at safes in an apparent attempt to force them open.

The four-day siege left hundreds injured and more than 60 people killed and property worth millions looted.

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Julius Karangi has since disputed claims that Kenya’s military officers looted during the Westgate mall siege.

On October 22, Gen Karangi told the joint committees of the National Assembly on National Security and Defence that the soldiers only “picked water from the Nakumatt store to quench their thirst.”

The military chief said the officers took water with authority from their commanders.
