Ruto, who was given a week-long break from his trial at the International Criminal Court following the Westgate mall terror attack, said security agencies would “up their game.”
“We want them to know that Kenya is ready for them… we will defend the lives and property of our people and the prosperity of the people of Kenya. We have what it takes to make our country safe,” Ruto asserted.
He termed the attack an act of cowardice.
“This primitive, barbaric group works for the devil but they should know that Kenyans serve a living God that had won this battle for us even before it began,” he said.
He however noted that the attack was carefully masterminded and assured Kenyans that the government will work night and day to ensure that the country is secured round-the-clock.
“The resolve to make Kenya safe is undeterred and shame on the terror suspects who were clearly planning to attack the nation whilst the President and I are away from the country,” said Ruto.
“I want to tell you that you have miserably failed,” he added.
Ruto expressed his gratitude to the international community for offering assistance saying, “We thank our international friends for coming to our rescue. We however want to fight this battle as a country, it is a Kenyan attack on Kenyan soil so we will fight it as Kenyans.”
Speaking to journalists after his arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the deputy President appreciated the efforts by the Kenya Defence Forces and the police to bring the matter to a hasty end and the rescue efforts they have been conducting since Saturday.
He also thanked Kenyans for the great solidarity they had shown in this trying moment by gathering funds and donating blood in large numbers.
“Kenya is a nation of wonder workers and I am proud to be one of you. We have defeated hatred with pure love; we overcame cruelty with kindness and conquered mindless anarchy with sanity and composure.”
“It is a miracle to see people selflessly giving blood to save their own. We have shown the world that unity reigns above this nation,” he said in his speech.
The trial of Ruto And journalist Joshua arap Sang was adjourned on Monday after the prosecution appealed against a request by the Deputy President to be allowed to stay in Kenya for two weeks.
Trial Chamber V(a) judges permitted Ruto a week-long break as the issue is determined.
A decision will be made on Ruto’s absence and whether the trial can proceed in his absence.
