President Uhuru Kenyatta is due commission the new berth 19 to ease congestion at the Port of Mombasa at a ceremony to be attended by Presidents Yoweri Museveni of Uganda South Sudan’s Salva Kiir and Paul Kagame of Rwanda.
The leaders will also attend talks at the Whitesands Hotel where they will discuss ways of improving efficiency at the Port of Mombasa and other key infrastructure developments in the East Africa region.
Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa assured the public and visiting leaders of adequate security during the talks.
“We assure all the visiting heads of states and other visitors that security has been scaled up to deal with any criminal activities in the county. We will apprehend those who might attempt to plan any attack in the area,” Marwa reaffirmed.
Addressing the media at his office on Tuesday after chairing a security meeting, the commissioner warned any criminal gangs that might dare to attempt to disrupt peace and tranquillity in the city.
He said security apparatus have been put on higher alert to deal with any organized criminal gangs.
He said police officers have been deployed at key areas including hotels and along the coastal beaches to avert any possible attacks.
Meanwhile security had also been tightened at the Mombasa International Show which President Kenyatta is expected to officially open on Thursday.
“We have installed CCTV cameras in key strategic locations to monitor activities within show ground which runs from Wednesday to Sunday.”
Mombasa, the country’s second largest city and a major tourist spot, is one of the cities hit by grenade attacks and abductions of foreigners in the past.
There had been apprehension in the coastal town as followers of cleric Aboud Rogo mark the first anniversary since his death, amid claims that there was a cover-up in his killing.
