NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 24 – Police on Saturday raided the Nairobi home and office of businessman Kamlesh Pattni, weeks after he was ejected out of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The plain clothes officers first raided his office located at Austen Place in Westlands before they moved to his Kitisuru home.

During the raid at his office, the detectives took away computers and unspecified documents before they headed to Kitisuru.

A guard at the offices who spoke to journalists said the police officers did not tell them why they were conducting the raid and what exactly they were looking for.

“They came at 7 am and used the back gate to access the compound after disconnecting the electricity fence. They were all plain clothes and they did not even identify themselves,” the guard said. “They searched everywhere after ordering us to leave the compound.”

The more than ten officers left the compound at midday.

Items taken away during the raid include 6 laptops and 6 CPU’s, an iPad, a mobile phone, flash disks and some documents. “We don’t know what they were looking for,” the officer said.

No official brief was provided to the journalists by officers conducting the search.

When reached later for comment, CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro said “I have not been briefed on this matter. There is little I can tell you at this moment.”

Pattni was not immediately available to comment on the matter after his mobile phone went unanswered and he did not reply a text message sent to him.

It was not immediately clear if the raid was linked to Pattni’s Duty Free shops destruction at JKIA where he enjoyed exclusive rights for several years.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) management has maintained that Pattni was ejected out of the airport on expiry of a lease agreement but the controversial businessman insists his rights were violated.

Weeks after the shops were destroyed, fire gutted a large section of the airport, paralyzing operations after destroying the international arrivals and departure lounges.

Police have not established the cause of the fire in a probe conducted jointly with detectives from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and other agencies.
