“We do not get direct allocations of funds. We only get equipment bought by the County Government or some of our workers are taken abroad for training,” he revealed.

He however observed that, “we know where it pinches most, so we should get the funds ourselves. That’s what happens internationally; funds are directed to the service providers.”

He also said they should be allowed to recruit more fire fighters.

Kisali said more fire fighters should be recruited on a yearly basis and be well trained noting that Nairobi county has currently 104 fire fighters and 33 officers only.

He urged Kenyans to get trainings in dealing with fire for their own safety saying, “disaster management is a collective responsibility and Kenyans should get training in order to play their role.”

He also revealed that they were plans by the County Government to increase the numbers of fire stations and to improve its preparedness.

He concluded by saying that, “Both the National and the County governments should include funding in the disaster management issues.”

The fire departments in the country have come under sharp criticism for not responding to emergencies with urgency.
