The First Lady urged local communities to support the education of children from vulnerable backgrounds to acquire knowledge/PSCU
The First Lady further said that investment in education also enhances equal opportunities and was an important asset for a country to its people.
She was speaking at Kianda School during a cocktail organized to review the school’s Peperuka scholarship project. Peperuka is the school’s Endowment Fund that sponsors students from financially challenged backgrounds.
The First Lady urged local communities to support the education of children from vulnerable backgrounds to acquire knowledge to better their lives.
She said, “We are reminded of the Bible teaching that it is in giving that we receive… As parents, we are given children by God to love and to nurture – this includes those children who are part of our community but who lack the resources to attend a school such as Kianda.”
The First Lady, who is an alumnus of the school, described the Kianda School Peperuka Scholarship Project as “an exemplary and splendid achievement.”
“From this school I learnt many things: I learnt the power of prayer, I learnt humility, charity and gratitude and most of all, I learnt to love my neighbour as myself. However, I still struggle with the heroic minute but I have the chance to try again every single morning!” she admitted.
She appealed to individuals and corporate institutions to support the Peperuka Project, whose future remains viable to continue providing opportunities for brilliant girls from poor backgrounds.
She commended parents, management and others involved in setting up the noble project, which she said, empowers children to play their rightful role in shaping the future of the country.
The First Lady, who accepted to be the Patron of the Peperuka Scholarship Scheme, encouraged other schools around the country to initiate similar projects and support more children from poor families exploit their potential in education.
The scholarship scheme, which currently sponsors over 48 school girls from financially challenged backgrounds, targets to raise Sh100 million to bring on board more students unable to pay fees due to change in family fortunes. So far the scheme has raised over Sh31 million.
