NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 6 – Lawyer Kethi Kilonzo was on Tuesday morning questioned by officers at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over claims of voter registration fraud.

Kethi arrived at the CID offices in the company of her lawyers and supporters after 10am.

The CID is investigating how Kethi obtained a voter’s slip that was removed from the same booklet used to only register former President Mwai Kibaki ahead of the March 4 elections.

According to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the booklet was not in circulation at the time of the countrywide voter registration exercise.

During hearings before the IEBC disputes resolution committee, Director of Voter Registration and Electoral Operations Immaculate Kassait explained that the slip was stolen and it was not clear how it ended up in Kethi’s possession.

“The Wiper candidate’s slip is not among those distributed anywhere in the country. The booklet where the slip was taken from was used to register the former president, and five others (slips) went missing. The slip held by Kethi is among those missing,” she explained on July 6.

Kethi moved to the High Court on August 5 to compel the electoral commission to give her documents she believes will help her explain her case.

The commission however, argued that some of the information she was seeking was already at the CID headquarters and it would not be possible to furnish her with it.

Among the items that Kethi wants is the booklet from which her voter’s slip was allegedly stolen as well as the date when the IEBC reported the alleged theft.

She also wants the commission to give her a certified copy of the acknowledgment slip of former President Mwai Kibaki and a certified copy of the distribution list of all the acknowledgment slip booklets.

Kethi is also demanding for all the information the IEBC used to nullify her candidacy for the Makueni mini-poll, in addition to a certified copy of the register of voters with biometrics that was used at the NCC Social Hall, where she claimed to have registered.

Some IEBC officials have also been grilled in the investigations aimed at establishing how Kethi obtained the slip.
