NAIROBI Kenya, Aug 14 – Footage captured on CCTV cameras during Monday’s shooting in Nairobi where a bride and her brother-in-law were killed shows that the still-unknown assailants first shot the man before turning their gun to his screaming, frightened sister in-law.
The slain man was a police officer with the anti stock theft unit and had taken time off to attend his brother’s wedding which was scheduled for this Saturday.
“The footage shows how they came along the street where one person was left in the car as the rest headed to the shop (at Corner house). They first shot the man and as they were leaving, the woman screamed which provoked them to shoot her,” a senior police officer involved in the investigations told Capital FM News.
“There is high possibility that the initial target was not the woman.”
During the incident that occurred at 4pm, the man identified as Ayub Nyaoke sustained head injuries from the shot to his head but succumbed to injuries on Tuesday night at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Nyaoke, a police officer based in Narok, had traveled to Nairobi to attend his brother’s wedding that was scheduled for Saturday. He had accompanied the couple for shopping in the city centre when three gunmen confronted them at a shop and shot them, killing the bride on the spot.
Separately, Central divisional Police chief Patrick Oduma told Capital FM News that investigations were still ongoing.
“We are also appealing to Members of the Public that whoever has information to come forward and give us information that can make us get the culprits,” he pleaded.
“So far I cannot say there are crucial leads but I’m sure we are going to get them. Even if I want to define this situation as robbery, I can’t since the circumstances do not allow me to say so; they just shot them and left, “he affirmed.
“This was one of its kind. We are going to make sure we bring to book whoever is involved; it was murder.”
On the question of who could have been a possible target, the police Chief said, “We cannot say that it was the bride or the police officer (brother in law) who was targeted. All these people are dead and no one has come to say so.”
“I cannot tell whether they even knew they were killing a police officer,” he said.
The bride, Beatrice Nyaoke was set to renew her marriage vows this weekend.
Nyaoke, a mother of four was wife to Newton Owino, 40.
“It was a young family their first born is in class four while the second born is in class one. It is very unfortunate for this to happen to one partner in a family when they are trying to mould the future of these young kids,” her brother mourned.
According to Owino, Beatrice was a businesswoman at Nairobi’s Huruma suburbs selling second-hand clothes.
The husband who was left unhurt in the Monday incident works as a security guard.
