NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 8 – The State Law Office has partnered with Safaricom for easier payment of services like registration of companies, societies, or weddings using M-PESA.

Solicitor General Njee Muturi said that the deal with Safaricom Enterprise Business Unit was worth Sh14 million and will be rolled out in two weeks.

“Under the new law Kenyans will no longer have to travel long distances to access State Law Office services,” he said.

Muturi said the State Law Office will acquire a USSD service where users are able to track their requests and make searches at their own convenience.

He said the State Law Office will also be able to disburse public trustee funds to various beneficiaries within the country through M-PESA and also facilitate the setting up of a contact centre to manage customer issues affecting the State Law Office.

“As the country embraces a developed system of government and seeks to offer services though digital platforms, we are confident that this move will only enhance efficiency in service delivery but also encourage more Kenyans to open up businesses across the country,” he said.

He stated that the deal will also provide a wide area network connection that will link State Law Office headquarters in Nairobi to its 12 regional branches.

The 12 branches include: Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Embu, Nyeri, Malindi, Kisii, Machakos, Meru, Eldoret, Garissa and Kakamega.

On his part, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Bob Collymore said that this partnership would make government more nimble and subsequently more responsible to people’s needs.

“With an increasing population and a growing economy, there is need to embrace Information Communication and Technology (ICT)-based solutions which will make the government deliver on all its expectations in a more efficient way,” Collymore noted.

He said Safaricom will offer an M-PESA Pay Bill number that will enable citizens to make payments to the State Law Office seamlessly without the inconvenience of queuing or travelling to the Stale Law Offices.

“This would allow individuals to pay for services like company searches, society registration fees and company registration fees among others.

The State Law Office has nine departments which cater for registration of businesses, drafting of treaties and agreements for the governments, administration of estates and management of trusts.

The office also caters for the Advocates Complaints Commission and Civil Litigation Department and protection of witnesses who have crucial evidence in sensitive cases among others.
