The Kenyan woman was arrested at the Moi International Airport while boarding a flight to Germany, according to Airport Police Chief Charles Okweya who said they had been looking for the 57-year-old since last month.
“Our officers have been trailing the suspect and we finally pounced on her as she waited to board the flight with the drugs,” he said.
Official from the government chemist examined the luggage and confirmed that it contained heroin powder that was wrapped in two suitcases with clothing and wooden ornament.
Police said they believe the woman is among key international drug dealers going by the countries she has previously travelled to.
The drugs had managed to pass through scanners at the airport undetected until they were intercepted when she was about to board the plane.
“The way the drugs were wrapped and stashed behind two brand new suitcases made it difficult to be detected by machines at the airport,” Okweya noted.
“This new trend of drug smuggling is becoming common but we are working had to apprehend the drug barons.”
He said one of the suitcases had 2.5 kilograms while the other had 1.5 kg of heroin.
Cases of drug trafficking have been on the rise in the recent past with more arrests made including Nigerians at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi and cocaine confiscated.
Police have intensified operations on drug traffickers in Kenya with more than 50 foreigners being deported over the offence in the past month alone.
Among them are 11 Nigerians including businessman Anthony Chinedu.
