NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 19 – Police have assured Makueni County residents of ample security during the forthcoming by-election slated for next Friday.

Regular police spokesperson Gatiria Mboroki claimed that police were aware of plans by certain cliques to cause violence during the by-election maintaining that any such efforts would be thwarted.

While reading the Inspector General’s statement on Friday, Mboroki warned the misinformed individuals to keep off their plans because they would be apprehended.

“As the Makueni by-election draws near the National Police Service is aware of the plans by some individuals to cause chaos or disrupt the exercise. This is wrong, criminal and unconstitutional. The police will not hesitate to take firm action against them,” she cautioned.

Administration police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi also said that security had been beefed up and that police would continue analysing the situation in Makueni as the days progress.

Hate mongers were also put on notice as campaigns for the by-election reach fever pitch.

“Spreading hate speech is something that we will not accept whether or not we have a forthcoming by election or not,” warned Mwinyi.

The High Court on Friday gave the Wiper Democratic Movement the green light to field another candidate for the Makueni County senatorial seat but at the same time put a halt to lawyer Kethi Kilonzo’s bid.

The Wiper party was also directed to select its candidate by close of day on Friday before finally settling on Kethi’s brother, Mutula Kilonzo Jr as its candidate.

With the Makueni senatorial race now firmly in check once again, campaigns will be fully charged and both the police and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission will have to put their ears on the ground for hate speech.

“I want to make this absolutely clear; that Mutula Kilonzo Jr is not joining politics but is joining leadership,” said Kilonzo Jr while accepting his endorsement.

Kilonzo Jr will be battling it out with Jubilee’s Philip Kaloki, former Kilome MP Harun Mwau who will be vying on a Party of Independent Candidates Kenya ticket, Jane Kitundu (Labour Party of Kenya) and independent candidate Urbanus Katumo.

Kethi has since indicated that she supports her brother’s new bid and that politics will never be “my favourite latte.”
