NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 29 – Seven thugs were on Sunday night shot dead by police in a botched kidnapping attempt in Nakuru.

The thugs, six men and a woman were ambushed by officers as they got into the compound of a local trader at Moi Flats at around 9.00pm.

According to the area OCPD Bernard Kioko, the thugs tied up the guard at the gate before getting into the compound unaware that undercover police officers were waiting for them.

“My officers laid an ambush and when we ordered them to surrender, they shot at us prompting us to return fire and in the process we killed them all,” he said.

He said that they had ordered the guard to open the gate and lie down as they got into the compound.

Kioko revealed that they had been trailing the suspects for the last couple of weeks after receiving a tip off from the public that they were planning to rob and kidnap the trader.

He said the identity of some of the thugs could not be immediately ascertained as each had more than five identification cards.

He stated that they had a homemade gun, four axes, several phones and ropes believed would have been used to tie up the family.

Some of the thugs were identified by locals and are said to have been involved in criminal incidences in Nakuru.

They also identified the car which operates as a taxi along Nakuru’s Kanu Street.
