Nairobi Central Division police Chief Patrick Oduma says the explosives came in from Tanzania and the matter was under investigation.
“Police officers were tipped off by members of the public that there was some luggage that had been off loaded from a vehicle that came from Tanzania and taken towards River Road,” he said.
He said that bomb experts identified the materials as Superpower 90 explosives.
Superpower 90 is a cap sensitive emulsion explosives with superior rock crushing capability specially designed for tunnel blasting and all kind of underground and above ground blasting operations.
Oduma said police were yet to arrest the person who left the baggage.
“The luggage had been loaded into a bus headed to Mombasa but unfortunately when our officers arrived, whoever brought the items had left,” he stated.
“Our bomb experts checked and confirmed they are explosives. If combined together, they are capable of exploding a big building.”
He said they are investigating if the explosives are linked to terror related activities.
“It does not matter what business they were meant to do. The matter becomes more suspicious since these items are supposed to be handled by a licensed person. In this case, the owner of the luggage concealed his or her identity,” he explained.
He said the police will remain vigilant to ensure the country was secure.
Meanwhile, anti-terrorism officers have launched a manhunt for a suspect who was supposed to receive the explosives.
Head of anti-terrorism unit Njiri Mwaniki says police are interrogating the driver of Mombasa bound bus who was arrested with the materials.
“We are investigating the matter. It’s too early to conclude the motive but we will investigate… our officers are piecing together crucial leads,” said Mwaniki.
