NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 8 – Kethi Kilonzo’s political future hangs in the balance as her hopes to succeed her father as Makueni Senator could be dashed or come true based on a ruling to be given by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Dispute Resolution Committee on Monday afternoon.

The committee’s chairman Thomas Letangule told Capital FM News that the ruling would be given at 2:30pm on Monday at the Milimani Law Courts following two days of hearings that were held on Friday and Saturday.

The bone of contention being whether or not the evidence produced at the hearings points toward Kethi being a registered voter and in turn whether she would be able to contest the July 22 Makueni by-election or not.

Kethi has however maintained that she is a registered voter despite damaging testimony by IEBC Director of Voter Registration and Electoral Operations Immaculate Kassait that the voter registration acknowledgement slip held by Kethi was from a stolen booklet.

“The Wiper candidate’s slip is not among those distributed anywhere in the country. The booklet where the slip was taken from was used to register the former president and five others went missing, and the slip held by Kethi is among those missing,” Kassait revealed on Saturday.

Kethi’s legal counsel has however maintained that she was not responsible for the safe keeping of the said booklet and could therefore not be held to account for possessing the alleged stolen slip.

The Wiper candidate’s political rival Professor Philip Kaloki will also know his political fate on Monday afternoon after the committee rules on whether or not he should vie on a NARC ticket following accusations by Wiper that he is still their member.

Kaloki is however adamant that despite vying for the Makueni Gubernatorial seat on a Wiper ticket on March 4; he would meet the 45 day membership requirement that would allow him to vie for electoral office on a NARC ticket.

“I left Wiper on May 23 and joined NARC on June 3 so by the time July 22 rolls around, I would have met the 45 day threshold by far,” Kaloki told Capital FM News.

Kethi has so far been branded the front runner in the Makueni Senate race but should she be prevented from running, the race will be thrown wide open with Harun Mwau who came in second in the March 4 general election becoming a formidable contender.
