NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 3 – Jubilee Members of Parliament will support amendments to the proposed VAT Bill to ensure that flour and bread are exempt from duty.

A statement from State House said; “Following consultations at yesterday’s Jubilee Parliamentary Group meeting, it was agreed that amendments will be tabled in Parliament to allow for exemption of maize flour and bread in the proposed VAT Bill.”

Members of the Jubilee Parliamentary Group agreed to support the amendment when debate on the Bill begins in Parliament.

“A successful amendment will ensure these vital commodities continue to be zero-rated.”

The meeting was chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House on Tuesday where he urged Jubilee coalition Members of Parliament to embrace teamwork in the National Assembly.

The president said the success of the Jubilee government in delivering on the development agenda pledged to Kenyans would depend on teamwork both in the Legislative and Executive arms of government.

Thanking MPs for their commitment to pushing forward the government’s legislative agenda as elected representatives, he said Kenyans voted for the Jubilee coalition due to the unity of purpose and teamwork demonstrated during the campaign period.

“You have managed to hold us together and we really appreciate your team work as demonstrated. The key for us is to recognize that the success of Jubilee government is the success of each one of us,” he said.

“We are a responsive and responsible government. We will deliver to the Kenyan people. Personally I promise to continue leading you from the front so that we can empower our people,” he told the MPs.

The meeting, attended by Deputy President William Ruto and Majority Leader in the National Assembly Adan Duale, brought together MPs from the Jubilee alliance and its affiliates.
