ASUNCION, July 26 – Police reported a fourth cold snap victim Friday in Paraguay, where average temperatures this week have been between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius (32 to 50 degrees Farenheit).

An 87-year-old man was found Thursday evening lying face down on the floor of his home in the southern town of Caballero. A coroner assessed his cause of death as hypothermia.

The cold snap also claimed a 62 year old man who died in Ciudad del Este in the country’s southeast.

A 55 year old man died in a neighborhood of the capital, Asuncion, and a 93 year old man died in San Lorenzo on its outskirts.

All deaths were reported as from hypothermia. In some regions, the wind chill factor reached -4 degrees Celsius, according to records from the country’s Bureau of Meteorology.

Farmers unions estimate that there will be crop losses from frost that is covering the ground.

Paraguay had hoped for record agricultural production this year, particularly from cereals and oilseeds.

Police and medics have been carrying out rescue operations for the destitute in cities exposed to low temperatures. Forecasters predict warmer weather for the weekend.
