, NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 4 – A section of Herufi House, where the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics is located, was damaged by fire on Thursday.
The blaze at the building which is located between the Central Bank of Kenya and the Treasury started at 4am.
According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) acting Director General Zachary Mwangi, one of the server rooms was completely burnt in the fire.
“We did receive a call at 6am that one of our server rooms was on fire. We did call the fire brigades and with the support of the Central Bank and the various firms like National Youth Service, KK security, we have managed to put out the fire,” he said.
“So now what we want to do is to clear up the building so that the fire is put off completely,” he said at the scene.
According to police, the fire was contained after fire fighters from private firms battled the inferno.
The building mainly acts as a storage for crucial government documents but Mwangi added that no data was lost because they have backups elsewhere.
“There is no cause for alarm because we have a backup elsewhere for whatever has burnt. But the damage is major and will take time to reconstruct,” he said.
He stated that preliminary findings pointed to an electrical fault.
Other officials said the incident was the fourth in two years.
Workers were informed to wait outside as experts assessed the damage.
No fire engine from the Nairobi City County responded to the fire but those from the KK Security and National Youth Service came in handy as they arrived minutes later and managed to contain the blaze.
