While describing their victory as a miracle, Ruto said they owe the support they got from Kenyans to God.
“Prayer is not a ritual and if you are in doubt, ask Uhuru Kenyatta and myself. Prayer is serious business because we have seen God answer prayers. When we decided to work together, we were persuaded by the words and the scripture in Mathew 5: 9 which says blessed are the peace makers for they will be called children of God,” he recalled.
He recounted how even after getting into office he was humble enough to kneel down before God and pray despite a strict programme by the Chief of Defence Forces.
“I did not know how we were going to tell this man that we are going to kneel down. So the President just told me just leave it; just tell the pastor to come and announce,” he said.
“So when that time arrived and we were supposed to kneel down I saw the eyes of the Chief of the Defence Forces, he was not amused. He told me there was no way that the Commander in Chief was going to kneel down and the soldiers are there.”
Ruto added that the President handled the situation with humility which befitted him as a statesman and attributed all his success to God.
“The President told him, ‘CDF, just step back,’ and we knelt down and we were prayed for. A few days later however, I met the CDF and he told me his wife told him that if there was the ceremony of the inauguration, forget about everything else that happened – the kneeling down was the event! So he finally came around and agreed that it was the right thing to do,” Ruto said.
He also recalled how one of their aides joked outside State House that a miracle could happen and someone shows up saying they were not the genuine winners of the election.
“When we went to State House for the first time after we won the election, we had a chat then we came outside and then another aid of ours came outside and told us, now you guys, suppose someone shows up here and tells us, sorry gentlemen, it was a small mistake, you are not the ones who are supposed to be here,” he joked.
He urged all Kenyans to unite with humility and emulate their example in giving glory to God for their successes.
“As we go forward beyond our political divide, beyond the races and communities we come from, it is our desire that God puts us together, wields us together, brings us together so that we can work together and have one prosperous nation,” he said.
The prayer meeting is organised by the Parliamentary prayer group through voluntary donations from members.
The prayer session was attended by various leaders, including Senators, Governors, Members of Parliament, and Judges among others.
