Speaking to the press when he met with all the County Commissioners, Cabinet Secretary in charge of Interior and Coordination of National Government, Joseph ole Lenku said the leaders from the area had signed an agreement in support of the government efforts to keep peace.
He warned those who may have been fuelling the violence, saying no one will be spared if found guilty.
“We are very clear that it doesn’t matter when you violate the law, whether you are an elected leader, an ordinary Kenyan or a foreigner; no one will be spared because security to us as the government is the priority,” he affirmed.
He expressed optimism in achieving peace saying: “Most of the community and elected leaders are on the ground working with our security officers to settle this issue once and for all.”
“We have given our officers all the necessary equipment they require and we are very sure that we will experience some good, peaceful situation in both counties.”
On Monday the Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo summoned all elected leaders from Mandera and Wajir counties to record statements at the CID headquarters, over weekend attacks in the region that left 24 people dead.
The leaders who were summoned to the CID headquarters included Governors, Senators, MPs and Woman Representatives in addition to County representatives.
At the same time, Lenku has reiterated the government’s commitment to fight drugs and illicit brews.
“We have purposed to deal with the manufacturers and distributors of illicit brews and not the five litres jerry can carriers. Our team using the necessary government intelligence and machinery will make sure all those involved are brought to book,” he warned.
In this regard, Lenku flagged off 22 new cars to County Commissioners who did not have functioning cars to carry on their duties.
He said his ministry is committed to ensure the young people who are highly affected are free of drugs and this will also empower them in their quest to maintain security in their respective areas.
President Uhuru Kenyatta while opening the 2nd National Conference on Alcohol and Drug Abuse two weeks ago said that it was time to move the rhetoric about drug abuse from boardrooms to the streets noting that underage children were accessing drugs while rogue law enforcers turned a blind eye.
The president gave all the County Commissioners three months within which they are required to get back to him with a detailed report on the actual measures they will have taken in the fight against drugs in their respective counties.
“We have heard a lot of very interesting speeches including my own with a lot of big promises but we must ask ourselves what are we doing with the resources that we have?”
