The Head of the Flying Squad Munga Nyale told Capital FM News that the girl was rescued unharmed on Friday night in Kasarani.
“Those who kidnapped her felt the pressure as we closed in on them and decided to run but they left the girl behind,” he said.
The little girl was returned to her parents unharmed but those behind the kidnapping managed to escape the police dragnet.
“The good news is that the doctors gave the child a clean bill of health but unfortunately the kidnappers managed to escape capture; we carried out a coordinated search of the area and they must have been alerted to our presence before we found them,” Nyale explained.
He was adamant however that the kidnappers will not evade capture for long, “I can assure you that we will work within our means as we did during the girl’s rescue and apprehend them.”
Nyale declined to disclose how police were able to ascertain the general location of the kidnappers but sources within the service indicate they worked with mobile phone operators following a Sh50,000 ransom call to the parents.
The two-year-old was in company of a driver when she was kidnapped.
The whereabouts of the driver remain unknown.
The police say given the ransom call it is likely the girl’s parents’ were well known to the kidnappers but they could not ascertain if the ransom had been paid.
“I wouldn’t know whether the ransom was paid or not,” Nyale said, “because carrying out our duty was not conditional on the parents being able to raise the ransom.”
