NAIROBI, Kenya, May 15 – Sixteen Cabinet Secretary nominees who were approved by the National Assembly will be sworn in on Wednesday morning at the State House Nairobi.

The swearing in ceremony that will be witnessed by President Uhuru Kenyatta was scheduled to take place before midday.

Parliament on Tuesday approved all the 16 nominees to the Cabinet in a debate that saw the Committee on Appointments blasted for rejecting Phyllis Kandie’s nomination to the East African Community, Commerce and Tourism docket.

The MPs gave the Committee flack accusing it of giving insufficient reasons for the rejection.

“She didn’t seem to understand what she will do with the docket. She will be our face out there when she talks about tourism, promoting commerce both locally and internationally; the lady did not know what the East African Community (EAC) was all about,” said minority leader Jakoyo Midiwo.

Leader of the Majority Coalition in the National Assembly Aden Duale had earlier tried to convince his colleagues to adopt the report as it was, saying that Kandie did not impress them.

“Madam Kandie has no integrity issue and she has no qualification problem. The only thing she was faulted on was her performance when she appeared publicly before the committee,” admitted Duale.

Duale’s explanation however drew criticism from the MPs drawn from the Jubilee and CORD coalitions.

“Duale is not in order to mislead this House by wasting a lot of our time telling us how she was qualified. We just want to understand the reasons that led to her rejection. Simple,” stressed Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati.

“Vetting is all about competence and integrity. The questions asked by the committee failed the country terribly,” charged Mukuruweini MP Kabando wa Kabando.

Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau further claimed that he was the only dissenting member in the committee.

Kamau was however countered by fellow committee members Joseph Nkaiserry and Ibrahim Sane separately for telling the House that he was the first to oppose Kandie’s nomination.

“I raised a question asking the committee for the reasons for the rejection of Ms Kandie and did not get any,” Kamau argued.

Cecily Mbarire who also sits on the committee said they felt that Kandie might have been intimidated by appearing before the media and politicians.
