NAIROBI, Kenya, May 2 – Senior police officers took off from the headquarters in Nairobi on Thursday for Busia and Bungoma Counties on a fact-finding mission following the recent spate of attacks and killings by an unknown gang.

The officers led by Deputy Inspector General of Police Grace Kaindi, Deputy Inspector General for Administration Police Samuel Arachi and the Director of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Ndegwa Muhoro are expected to come up with measures to contain the situation.

The Directorate of Criminal investigations has already initiated a probe and search for the gang.

The latest attacks occurred on Wednesday morning leaving two men dead at Akabait Village in Busia County after unknown assailants moved from house to house stabbing people.

More than 20 people were injured in the attack with four of them admitted to the Busia District Hospital in a critical condition.

The attack occurred after midnight for several hours and by the time police arrived to evacuate the injured to hospital, the gang had left the scene.

Officers from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit and CID headquarters in Nairobi already left Nairobi on Wednesday with a mission to investigate the motive of the attacks and apprehend those behind it.

Wednesday morning’s attack occurred two days after a similar stabbing spree in Bungoma County left 125 injured in Kibabii, Kikwechi and Mukwa villages.

Those who fell victim to Monday’s attack say the gang used acid apart from machetes, bows and arrows in their attack and even forced one man to drink the acid before taking his eyes out.

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula has called for an overhaul of the police in his county given like in Akabait, the police arrived on the scene after the fact.

Similar attacks have occurred in the Kimalewa, Kuywa, Kapkateny and Makutano villages of Bungoma County in the past two weeks

Western Police boss Alfred Ombaba has however assured residents of the Western part of the country of their safety and promised that his officers will do everything in their power to bring the perpetrators to book

The public lynched two members of the forty member gang which carried out the Bungoma stabbings after they tried to attack a fourth village and the police arrested a man they suspect to have been part of the gang.
